BCHF welcomes new residents into Lockleaze

BCHF welcomes new residents into Lockleaze image

2nd December, 2011

With new house building at a record low and the desperate need for affordable housing continuing to rise, BCHF is working hard to find new ways to build more homes. Government policy now means that any new homes funded with govt. subsidy must have rents set at 80% of market rents.

Earlier this year BCHF tenants took part in a discussion with BCHF’s Board about whether we should apply for this funding. It was jointly agreed to go ahead because of the urgent need in Bristol for new affordable homes. In July we learnt that we had been successful and we are now working hard on plans to build over 100 new homes in Bristol and South Gloucestershire over the next four years.

This month we completed 14 new homes in Lockleaze. The development at Copley Gardens includes 10 flats and 4 houses. Two of the houses are being sold as shared ownership and the flats are let at 80% of market rents.

Mrs Amanda & Mr Nejmeddine Darej and their son Zak were living with family in overcrowded conditions and have now moved into their new flat.  This is their first home together as a family and they said “We’re absolutely speechless; this seems too good to be true!  The flat is amazing and we’re delighted with all the support and help we’ve been given by the staff at BCHF, we’re so happy”

Also starting this month, is BCHF’s newest project to build 23 homes on Pigsty Hill in Bishopston. The site has been derelict for over 40 years and demolition work will start in the New Year.  As well as 18 flats for sale and rent there will also be five three bed houses.
