Tips for first time internet users

The following information should allow you to make the most out of the internet and to make it an informative and rewarding experience. The tips refer to Microsoft Explorer only.

The basics

Browser The software program used to allow the user to surf the internet. The most common browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape.

Homepage The default page that appears on the screen every time you access your browser.

Website A page of information that can be viewed

Link Many internet pages are linked to others. Links are often displayed in a different colour or in a different font. If you move your cursor over a link the word will normally become underlined. To access this link click the left mouse button.

Toolbar A collection of actions or icons that allow the internet user to perform different tasks.

Address bar Every website has a unique address. The address bar is where the address of the website that you are viewing goes. To change the site that you are viewing you should: left click at the end of the previous address field; press delete; type the address of the page you want to visit e.g. www.bchf.co.uk; press enter.
